Liberton Lightning

Liberton Lightning vs. Craigour Park

Friday 30th of November saw Liberton Lightning’s final game before the winter break, as well as a timely reminder of why we need one! Despite the awful weather (which cut our match short) both teams played fantastically well, with Liberton Lightning the 2-0 victors.

There were chances for both teams, but Liberton gradually grew into the game following some brilliant goalkeeping by Skye. Let’s hope she can make it to more games in 2019, because she was alert, composed and safe whenever she was called upon. Karlie and Abbie were rocks at the back as ever, with some excellent tackles. Lexie, playing on the right wing this week, had a couple of chances to score before pouncing on a bouncing ball in the box to volley home the opening goal. It was an excellent piece of opportunism from Lexie, who took her total for the season to an incredible 10 (TEN) goals. The chances continued for Liberton and Lexie, Morgan and Emma were unlucky not to add to the scoreline. Emma and Morgan played their best matches yet for Liberton, with brilliant pressuring, movement and effort throughout the match. Olivia bossed the game, winning so many tackles in a busy midfield and looking after the ball superbly. She capped off her wonderful performance with a contender for goal of the season, a stunning strike from well outside the box, which nestled itself in the top corner of the net. Breathtaking stuff from Captain Liv. That was where it all ended, with the wind swirling, the hailstones hammering and the cold biting, we decided to call it a day. Thank you to Craigour Park for coming down to the Inch to play us and thank you to the supporters who braved the elements to come and cheer us on!

That’s us finished for now. It has been a brilliant first half of the season for us and I am extremely proud of how far we have come as a team in such a short time. Our team has shown such wonderful skill, effort, commitment and positivity throughout. I can’t wait to get back to the games after our well-deserved break. Glory, glory Libby Lightning!

Our form sheet so far:

P6-7: L – D – W – W – L – L – D – W

P4-5: L – W – W – L – L

Bruntsfield vs. Liberton Lightning – 03/11/18

On a blustery day in Harrison Park, both Liberton Lightning teams recorded two fantastic victories against Bruntsfield Primary.

P4-5 Liberton Lightning dominated possession and were denied repeatedly by some excellent defending by Bruntsfield, before a long-range drive secured a 1-0 victory. Captain Jess played brilliantly well, with some superb dribbling, passing and shooting which really deserved a goal. Alex, playing for Lightning for the first time, was brilliant both in goals and outfield, showing the confidence of a player who had been there for years. Holli put in another excellent shift, with incredible energy and tackling – another player who was unlucky not to get a goal on the day. Sophie J keeps on getting better and better as a defender – it was an amazing performance from her. Whenever Bruntsfield threatened to get forward, it was often Sophie who stopped them, letting nothing past her. Not only that, she even scored the winner! After getting the ball just inside the opposing half, she hit a hard left-foot shot from well outside the box. It traveled through the forest of legs in front of her and nestled in the bottom corner of the net. What a goal! Congratulations on your first goal and your first player of the match award, Sophie! Well done to Beth and Catriona, who played in their first game for the team and made a great effort. Miss Mason and Mr. Robertson are so proud of the whole team for the way they stayed positive and kept on trying their best.

P6-7 Liberton Lightning keep on going from strength to strength. They won 5-0 against Bruntsfield Primary and from the first whistle, the win never looked in doubt. This was a dominant performance by Lightning, with the great positioning, pressing and concentration stopping the opponents from leaving their half. Lexie had an incredible match as striker and opened the scoring with a bullet into the bottom corner after some great work by Isla in her first game for the team. Just minutes later, it was Lexie again who, after a super pass from Captain Fantastic Olivia, smashed the ball into the net for her second of the match. The second half was much the same story with Liberton dominating play and Morgan especially showing brilliant positional sense and movement to create chances for herself an her teammates. She was very unlucky not to score on the day, but her hard work led to the third goal for Lexie. She broke away from the defence, kept a cool head and struck the ball hard and low past the goalie. The first ever hattrick for a Liberton Lightning player! She wasn’t finished there though. It wasn’t long before she was celebrating a stunning fourth goal for herself and her team, with another clinical finish. In truth, Lexie was very unlucky not to score another three or four goals. She made herself almost impossible to defend against. As the second half wore on, (and our defenders crept forward trying to score), Bruntsfield had a few chances which were fantastically saved by Isla, who had taken over in goals at half-time. As Bruntsfield came into the game, Olivia, who had been attacking relentlessly, turned into a true box-to-box midfielder. Whenever there was danger, she chased from front to back to stop Bruntsfield in their tracks. Even though she had taken over much of the defensive duties brilliantly, Olivia stayed involved in our attacks, leading to our fifth goal. She won the ball outside the box, dribbled her way past the defence and hit a glorious shot past the ‘keeper. A just reward for a heroic performance from Olivia! Karlie and Amy were solid again in defence, with Karlie even managing a three-quarters-of-the-pitch solo ending in a shot which shaved the post. Summer and Rachel put in their best performance so far for Liberton too, with some brilliant tackling, passing and effort in midfield. I am immensely proud of the team and the progress they’ve made. It was impossible to choose a single player of the match, so we have two this week. Congratulations to Lexie with her four goals and Olivia, who covered every blade of grass with an all-action performance.

Two more wonderful wins for our teams. Come on, Liberton Lightning!

Liberton Lightning vs. Taobh na Pàirce – 27/10/18

This morning, Liberton Lightning P6-7s recorded their first win of the season in a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Taobh na Pàirce. Both teams played superbly well, but it was the team from Liberton who, with excellent teamwork, effort and bravery, came out on top.

Taobh na Pàirce started well and took the lead early with some great movement and positioning. Liberton responded well to the early pressure, defending as a team and gradually taking control of the game. Eventually, we got the breakthrough. Olivia won the ball with a tough tackle in midfield, passing out to Courtney on the left, who played the ball to Lexie on the edge of the box. With a stunning first-touch and turn, Lexie beat her marker and bulleted the ball into the bottom corner for the equaliser. It really was a brilliant goal. Just before half-time, Liberton Lightning got the lead their effort deserved. Lexie this time turned provider, passing to Courtney just inside the box. The shot from Courtney was unsavable, hitting the post on its way into the back of the net.

Liberton Lightning continued their excellent play after half-time, creating some great chances. It was only luck that prevented them turning into more goals. The real story of this game, though, was how well our players defended together.

Truthfully, it was so difficult to chose a player of the match for this one! Amy, playing her first game for the team, was fantastic, winning lots of tackles and playing clever passes forward. Sophie and Rayden, playing their first games too, were calm and composed, both looking very dangerous up front and Sophie did a great job in goals. Olivia simply bossed the midfield, she took control of the game and gave everything for the team: a true captain’s performance. Courtney was wonderful outfield and her performance in goals was a main reason for the win, as well as her winning goal. Summer had a brilliant match, full of great tackling and passing. Morgan had her best game yet, with excellent running and control – that first goal is coming soon. Rachel was another person who was unlucky she didn’t score and looked dangerous in the box. Lexie had her best match ever, with some fantastic turns, quality passes and that terrific and important goal. Karlie, the player of the match, put in a warrior’s performance with tough tackling, bravery (including multiple injuries) and effort from start to finish.

Sorry for going on a bit this week, but I’m just so proud of every one of the players for managing to win against an excellent opponent. Come on, Liberton!

Blackhall vs. Liberton Lightning – 06/10/18

20180929_122937_resized

It was on a chilly morning on Ravelston Park, that both Liberton Lightning teams produced their best performances yet.

The P6-7 team were fantastic throughout their game, dominating large parts of the match with some great play from everyone. The match finished 2-2, but Lightning played some excellent football. Lexie – the Player of the Match – opened the scoring by quickly stealing the ball before the goalkeeper could collect it. This was closely followed by a rocket-shot from Summer from the edge of the box, which any goalkeeper would have struggled to save. This was a great team performance, though. Abbie was amazing in defence, Karlie and Olivia dominated midfield and Lexie and Morgan looked extremely dangerous whenever they got the ball. Well done everybody!

It was goals galore in the P4-5 Liberton Lightning match as they ran out 5-0 winners against Blackhall. Anna’s effort from start to finish paid off with the opening goal and a Player of the Match performance. She was alert in the box and got to the ball before everyone else to knock in the opener. Jessica showed the frightening power she has in her left foot by adding a wonderful second. After that, the tireless Holli’s determination was rewarded with 2 great goals either side of a lovely strike by Morgan. What a way to get our first win of the season!

Both teams produced their best yet and can be delighted to get their first points on the board for this season. Once again, the coaches and supporters are so proud of you. Keep trying your best!

Liberton Lightning vs. South Morningside – 29/09/18

20180929_122937_resized.jpg

Liberton Lightning P4-5s and P6-7s played their first ever competitive games this morning, as they began their Edinburgh Primary Schools Sports Association seasons against South Morningside Primary.

The P4-5 team lost a very even contest 2-3, with two fantastic goals from Nicole. All of the players tried their best and were very unlucky not to be on the winning team. Morgan made some excellent saves in goals and the player of the match, Holli, showed outstanding effort and commitment to the team.

The P6-7 team also lost a very close game 2-3, with a truly wonderful goal from Olivia, in which she won 4 tackles before smashing the ball into the bottom corner. This was followed by a cheeky chip over the keeper from Courtney. The effort from the whole team was amazing and Lexie and Karlie defended really well together. Olivia was the player of the match for her superb effort at both ends of the pitch – a superstar effort from her.

Well done everyone who took part, you made the coaches and supporters so proud!

We played our first official friendly in our brand new strips on Wednesday 23rd May versus Craigour Park. Both teams played fantastically well and there was a great atmosphere from a brilliant crowd full of fans of both teams. We were very unlucky to lose 3-2 to a last minute goal in a very even game! Mr. Robertson, Miss Mason, Miss Hughes and Mr. Theakston were hugely impressed and proud of how everyone played. This is just the beginning, there will be many more matches and many more goals to come from us!
