Weekly Newsletter 2nd February 2024

Highlights from this week at Liberton Primary

  • On Tuesday we had another great Libby Leaders session, including a quiz with the residents of Inch Park Care Home, preparations for One World Week and a visit from our Eco and Biodiversity group to the Wee Forest at Mount Vernon.
  • Thank you to all the parents who attended our  P7 parents meeting regarding the end of term celebrations.  An email with details from the meeting has been sent to all P7 parents.
  • The highlight of this week was seeing so many parents attending our new format Sharing our Learning session on Wednesday.  There was a lovely buzz around the school with children proudly showing off their learning to their parents and carers.
  • On Thursday our assembly for P4 to P7 was themed on Chinese New Year and children shared their plans for celebrating this next weekend.  We also had a rocking version of Living on a Prayer performed by P6 (including glockenspiel solo) as a demonstration of our new music programme.
  • Also on Thursday, P5A continued their Forest School refresher sessions with Miss Mason, with a visit to Inch Park and the local community to identify places to work, live and relax.

Coming up

  • Next week we will have Generation Science in school, working with P5 on Monday and P1 on Tuesday.
  • Tuesday is Safer Internet Day.  Throughout this week classes will spend time looking at ways to stay safe online.  An excellent resource for parents to help protect their children can be found at https://www.internetmatters.org/digital-family-toolkit/
  • On Thursday it will be the turn of our Nursery to P3s to take part in our Chinese New Year Assembly.
  • On Friday we will break up for half term holiday and the school will be closed from Monday 12th to Friday 16th February.  We look forward to welcoming the children back to school on Monday 19th February.

One World Celebration Wednesday 28th February from 3.15pm to 4.15pm.

Thank you to volunteers from Italy, Hungary, India, Kazakhstan, South Africa and Poland who have been added to the list of China, USA and France.  More countries are very welcome to join.

You can sign up at https://forms.office.com/e/K8unMEFXxx or get in touch for more information.  For this celebration we invite families from our school community to bring in some samples of traditional or favourite food that pupils and parents could try.  We will have tables set up for the various nations involved and children will complete a passport for each stall they visit.  There will be a small charge for the session so that parents can reclaim the cost of the food they bring.

Liberton Nursery School Decant

On Friday 9th February Liberton Nursery School will decant to St John Vianney’s for a year while the nursery school building is being refurbished.  We are looking forward to having our colleagues a little bit closer and are very grateful to all the staff at St John Vianney’s nursery for making us so welcome.

Outdoor Learning Update

We have been working hard to develop outdoor learning across the school and this is a key part of our school improvement plan. Staff have taken part in several different training sessions to develop skills in taking learning outdoors.  We aim to take learning outdoors at least once a week alongside outdoor PE and other excursions.

Here are our plans for this term:

  • Primary 1 are developing their outdoor play area as part of their free flow play.
  • Primary 2 are taking science learning outside (sound topic) and some maths learning (time).
  • Primary 3 are focusing on maths, numeracy and art outdoors. They are also continuing their Forest School programme.
  • Primary 4 are focusing on team building games to develop their skills in communication and problem solving. They are also continuing with their seasonal walks.
  • Primary 5 are focusing on activities to develop cooperative skills and connect with nature. They are also taking part in a Forest School refresher session led by Miss Mason.
  • Primary 6 are taking science and maths outdoors and will have a focus on collaborating. They will also be visiting the Fruit Market Gallery.
  • Primary 7 are focusing on maths and teamwork outdoors.
  • Our Tiger group will continue with their daily outdoor sessions with a focus on play and bushcraft activities.
  • Every class will have a loose parts play session once per month.

Pupil Absence

Please remember the NHS guidance that children who have been vomiting need to be off school for at least 48 hours following their last episode.

Also please inform the school if your child has had any infectious diseases such as chicken pox.  This helps us keep our whole school community safe.

Free Bike Offer

At The Bike Station, we believe that bikes should be as accessible as possible, especially for kids as they grow out of their bikes quickly. That is why we provide our Wee Bike Library service, where families can borrow bikes for free and exchange them for the next size up as their kids grow!
