Weekly Newsletter 9th February 2024

Highlights from this week at Liberton Primary!

  • On Monday P5 watched a show called ‘Body Builders’ performed by Generation Science.

This linked into the P5 science topic ‘The Human Body’. It was enjoyed by all!

  • On Tuesday P1 took part in a Generation science workshop called ‘Ready, Teddy, Go’ where they explored energy and forces.

They had a lot of fun investigating pushing, pulling, gravity and friction.

  • P3a and P4 have been playing Rubix Run, an outdoor learning game to develop problem solving and team building skills.
  • P3a have been using Loch Ness monster as inspiration for writing and art.
  • P4 have been working hard on mental strategies for addition and subtraction and enjoying doing their research

and Keynote presentations on significant Scots.

  • In P6 this week, the children planned, researched and wrote a report on a subject of their choice. These included subjects like

coding, horse riding and Fortnite.  We also had a lot of fun singing and playing our glockenspiels along to “Livin’ on a Prayer”

by Bon Jovi.

  • P7s have been learning about the Evacuation of Dunkirk during WW2 and they have been using their engineering

skills to design a product that solves an everyday problem.

  • The Tiger group have been continuing their learning around the world. This week they celebrated Chinese New Year,

making dragons and made some tasty noodles!

  • Classes across the school had a focus on staying safe online this week as it was Safer Internet Day on Tuesday.

P5B Super Swimmers!

P5B successfully completed their block of swimming lessons recently with everyone making excellent progress and gaining a well-deserved certificate of achievement. The staff at Gracemount Leisure centre commented regularly on how well behaved, calm and polite the class were (as did various members of the public and Number 7 bus drivers), which was wonderful to hear. Mr McGee would like to say a massive thanks (again) to Mrs Gillian Robertson and the various amazing parents and grandparents who gave up their time to help out over the ten weeks. Taking a class of 31 eight and nine year olds out on public transport is a considerable challenge and it would not have been possible to undertake this essential programme of lessons without their assistance.

Liberton Lightning P6/7 Match Report

Liberton Lightning P6/7 team won again last Saturday. Against a strong Bruntsfield team, with many club players, it was a close game until the end. Liberton won 10-3 with goals from Larissa, Amelia 4, Amy 4, and Zuzanna. Strong performances across the whole team with excellent defending from Mya, Imogen, and Amelie. Also tireless work rate in midfield from Renee and Isla. Player of the match was Amelia for her goals, but also her excellent saves while in goal at the start of the match.

One World Celebration Wednesday 28th February from 3.15pm to 4.15pm.

Thank you to volunteers from Italy, Hungary, India, Kazakhstan, South Africa and Poland who have been added to the list of China, USA and France.  More countries are very welcome to join.

You can sign up at https://forms.office.com/e/K8unMEFXxx or get in touch for more information.  For this celebration we invite families from our school community to bring in some samples of traditional or favourite food that pupils and parents could try.  We will have tables set up for the various nations involved and children will complete a passport for each stall they visit.  There will be a small charge for the session so that parents can reclaim the cost of the food they bring.

Liberton Nursery School Decant

Today Liberton Nursery School will decant to St John Vianney’s for a year while the nursery school building is being refurbished.  We are looking forward to having our colleagues a little bit closer and are very grateful to all the staff at St John Vianney’s nursery for making us so welcome.

Outdoor Learning Update

We have been working hard to develop outdoor learning across the school and this is a key part of our school improvement plan. Staff have taken part in several different training sessions to develop skills in taking learning outdoors.  We aim to take learning outdoors at least once a week alongside outdoor PE and other excursions.

Here are our plans for this term:

  • Primary 1 are developing their outdoor play area as part of their free flow play.
  • Primary 2 are taking science learning outside (sound topic) and some maths learning (time).
  • Primary 3 are focusing on maths, numeracy and art outdoors. They are also continuing their Forest School programme.
  • Primary 4 are focusing on team building games to develop their skills in communication and problem solving. They are also continuing with their seasonal walks.
  • Primary 5 are focusing on activities to develop cooperative skills and connect with nature. They are also taking part in a Forest School refresher session led by Miss Mason.
  • Primary 6 are taking science and maths outdoors and will have a focus on collaborating. They will also be visiting the Fruit Market Gallery.
  • Primary 7 are focusing on maths and teamwork outdoors.
  • Our Tiger group will continue with their daily outdoor sessions with a focus on play and bushcraft activities.
  • Every class will have a loose parts play session once per month.

Pupil Absence

Please remember the NHS guidance that children who have been vomiting need to be off school for at least 48 hours following their last episode.

Also please inform the school if your child has had any infectious diseases such as chicken pox.  This helps us keep our whole school community safe.

Free Bike Offer

At The Bike Station, we believe that bikes should be as accessible as possible, especially for kids as they grow out of their bikes quickly. That is why we provide our Wee Bike Library service, where families can borrow bikes for free and exchange them for the next size up as their kids grow!
